She decided to take the opportunity to explore continental opportunities after a scouting visit to Portugal convinced her that despite the economic crisis, “the European contemporary dance is really thriving,” Kaufman says. “Arts funding has suffered, and Portugal was hit hard, but it is getting better. There are so many festivals, and it’s so easy to get around Europe. I’m really interested in presenting some of my solos that I’m showing in this performance.”.

Then it was “Team Foxing Awesome’s” turn. At the end, the guys all changed to complete fox outfits. With most of the strong dancers, the routine was tight and good, and the solos were all strong. — Gieson Cacho. A bassist supreme. In some hands, the bass is a simple rhythmic device, an unexciting, yet necessary instrument used to keep other musicians on track. In Stanley Clarke’s gigantic mitts, however, the bass inspires wild standing ovations among jazz fans. There simply is no other on the planet like Clarke, who many regard as one of the greatest bassists in music history. The things he accomplishes on both electric and acoustic bass are the stuff of legend, as he thumps, plucks and strums out dexterous runs that cause jaws to drop. His resume ranges from his pioneering fusion work in the ’70s with Return to Forever to writing scores for hit TV shows and films. He’s had a particularly nice run of late, sounding as strong as ever on such albums as 2009’s “Jazz in the Garden” and 2010’s “The Stanley Clarke Band.” Don’t miss the Stanley Clarke Band when it performs at two local venues next month. The group plays Jan. 25 at Santa Cruz’s Kuumbwa Jazz Center ($28-$31; 831-427-2227, www.kuumbwajazz.org) and Jan. 26-28 at Yoshi’s San Francisco ($20-$35; 415-655-5600, www.yoshis.com).
